Guidelines for Acceptable Text and Graphic File Formats

Editorial Submission Guidelines:

Are you a vendor or manufacturer introducing a new product or service to the market?  If so, consider submitting your new product release for inclusion in Surgical Products. Please use the guidelines below when submitting materials.

What We Need From You

In general, the more information you send us, the better. When you send us a release, please include the following:

• A technical description of the product. Tell us what it is, why it's important, and what it does.
• Key specifications. Be as specific as possible.
• A complete data sheet (if available). We can often pick out key specs that you haven't included in your release. Application notes or other supporting information is helpful.
• Your complete mailing address. Please also provide us with a phone number, fax number and URL.
• Product photographs & images: Please send color artwork (i.e. photos, slides, transparencies, or high resolution electronic images). We regret that photos and slides cannot be returned.
• The name, phone number, and fax number for your editorial contact.

Unacceptable: Images embedded in text files.
Backup: Send or fax hard copy of files

Graphics/Photo Files
(Images, graphics, logos, photos, page layouts)

Submission Requirements: When submitting art, please attach all relevant information such as product name, model, etc. to the image. Please be sure to write on the information BEFORE placing onto the artwork to avoid damage. Staples, tape or paper clips should not be applied to original artwork.

Digital Files
Program Compatibility: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, or QuarkXPress

File Transfer
Preferable: 3.5" floppy, Zip disk, CDs
Acceptable: E-mail - small files (under 1 MB), SyQuest (up to 200 MB)
Unacceptable: E-mail - large files (over 1 MB tend to corrupt in transit)
Note: A laser of filenames should accompany any files submitted on removable media on the media and only relevant files should be on the media.

File Compression
Acceptable: Zip It
Unacceptable: LZW, Stuffit

File Formats
Preferable: EPS, Tiff, and Bitmap (for line art)
(All formats should be saved with PC preview if possible)
Acceptable: JPEG, PDF
Unacceptable: GIF

File Size/Resolution
Acceptable: Minimum dimensions 3 inches x 4 inches
Mimimum resolution 266 dpi (optimum is 304 DPI)
Bitmap images should have a resolution between 800 DPI and 1200 DPI
Unacceptable: Images created for the Internet, taken with a point-and-shoot digital camera or screen captures (due to their low resolution - 72 dpi).

Preferable: CMYK or grayscale (for halftones), Bitmap (for line art)
Acceptable: RGB
