It took a few years of reporting on the copious health benefits of regular physical activity for me to decide that my sedentary job and utter lack of exercise was going to catch up with me.

Of course it's worth the time and effort now to reduce my later risk of a heart attack, stroke, diabetes, obesity, and even cancer.

After about a year, my fitness level still wasn't great but I could jog over a mile -- something I hadn't been great at even when I had gym class to theoretically push me as a teen -- and did so regularly. The American Heart Associations' 30-minutes-a-day-most-days-of-the-week mantra seemed manageable.

So the results released from the Women's Health Study this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association were disheartening.
