Among patients undergoing surgical aortic valve replacement, a mismatch between the prosthesis size and patient size may worsen survival, a meta-analysis showed.

A moderate-to-severe mismatch was associated with a significantly greater risk of all-cause mortality during follow-up (HR 1.34, 95 percent CI 1.18 to 1.51), according to Stuart Head, MD, of Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam, and colleagues.

But the relationship with cardiac mortality fell short of statistical significance (HR 1.51, 95 percent CI 0.88 to 2.60), they reported online in the European Heart Journal.
