Taking Time To Talk with Patients
I was sitting in the office of Jim Paul, DO, a Buffalo, N.Y. internist a few months back. I was there working on a story, and after I had finished interviewing him, he said he had to make a few calls. I sat back and listened as he proceeded to call a number of his patients and check on their health status.
"Hi, it's Dr. Paul," he said to a patient, followed with something along the lines of:
"Just wanted to see how you were feeling. How often are you using your inhaler? Oh really? That's a lot. You shouldn't be using it that much. Do you want to come in? No? Okay, well I'll talk to you later this week to check up on you. Have a good one."
He proceeded to make a number of similar calls, all in a caring and friendly tone, even expressing concern when one patient said she wouldn't have a way to get to the office.
