Most OR Manager’s will only purchase new surgical lights once during their tenure at a specific facility. Needless to say you want to explore all your options before making a decision.  The first and easiest decision will be choosing between the benefits of LED (light emitting diode) surgical lights or conventional halogen surgical lights.  There are several benefits you will get from selecting LED lights.

LED lights offer the end user a reduction in energy consumption.  In some cases, LED’s use 50 percent less energy then the energy required to operate a halogen light.

Another benefit of LED lights is the life expectancy. The LED’s will last approximately 50,000 hours as opposed to 1,500 hours life expectance for a halogen, therefore cutting down on waste of disposing of the bulb and packing materials.

In addition to the waste savings of the bulbs, there are additional waste savings from autoclaving handles.  The light you purchase should offer controls on the sterile handle.  Make sure the handle can be sterilized and doesn’t require the use of a disposable glove for controlling the on/off or intensity.  Eliminating the disposable gloves will lower the amount of materials that end up in land fills.  Helping you achieve a “greener” operating room.
