Endoscopic Pancreas Removal Cuts Mortality

Incisionless endoscopic surgery to remove an infected necrotizing pancreas through the stomach may cut down on inflammation and complications, a small trial showed.

The NOTES (Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery) procedure substantially cut the rate of major complications and mortality to just 20 percent compared with 80 percent using conventional surgery (P=0.03), Olaf J. Bakker, MD, of the University Medical Center Utrecht, in the Netherlands, and colleagues found.

The 22-patient trial also showed lower postprocedural interleukin (IL)-6 levels with the less invasive technique (P=0.004), they reported in the March 14 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
