No Charges In Federal Probe Of Medtronic Infuse

The U.S. Department of Justice has closed its probe of Medtronic's marketing of its Infuse bone growth product for spinal fusion surgery without filing charges, the company said.

Controversy has surrounded the Infuse product -- a device that incorporates bone morphogenic protein-2 (BMP-2) to speed vertebral fusion in procedures intended to relieve back pain -- for several years.

MedPage Today/Milwaukee Journal Sentinel investigation revealed that Medtronic had paid large sums to doctors who conducted clinical trials with the product and authored reports in medical journals.
