Some Transplant Candidates Need More Imaging

A subgroup of patients awaiting a kidney transplant could benefit from closer surveillance by SPECT myocardial perfusion imaging, researchers suggested.

Of the 133 patients in the study who underwent screening before renal transplant from 2003 to 2011, 6 percent developed new ischemia or infarct during an average follow-up of 5 years, according to Sapna Legha, MD, of Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, and colleagues.

The risk factors associated with these patients were a history of diabetes (OR 14.0,P<0.005) and known coronary artery disease (OR 6.1, P<0.02), Legha reported here at the annual meeting of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology.
