A man was sentenced to serve up to five years in a Pennsylvania state prison for stealing $234,000 from an ambulatory surgical center where he worked as the business manager. Joseph Grostas pleaded guilty to three counts of embezzling using a company credit card and electronic transfers to his bank account. Grostas used money stolen from the Surgery Center at Brinton Lakes in Glen Mills, PA to pay bills, purchase a motorcycle, pay his wife's college tuition, dine in restaurants and take friends on a trip to Nashville.

Grostas’ attorney told the court that his client’s marriage was falling apart and that he had fallen behind on bills at the time that the thefts occurred. After he pays back the money and serves his prison term, Grostas will be on probation for 16 years.

Surgery center administrator Gina Espenschied, RN, BSN, CNOR, discovered the theft in March while reviewing financial statements. Her audit revealed that Grostas had been dipping into the facility's funds for a year until his arrest in March.
