Richardson Elected To Chair Of ACS Board Of Regents
J. David Richardson, MD, FACS, a general, thoracic, and vascular surgeon from Louisville, KY, was elected Chair of the American College of Surgeons Board of Regents during the College’s 97th Annual Clinical Congress in San Francisco, CA. Dr. Richardson is a professor of surgery and vice chair of the department of surgery at the University of Louisville School of Medicine.
As Chair of the Board of Regents, Dr. Richardson will work closely with ACS Executive Director David B. Hoyt, MD, FACS and, as part of his leadership role, he will chair the Regents’ Finance and Executive Committees. The College’s 22-member Board of Regents formulates policy and is ultimately responsible for managing the affairs of the College. The Board’s diversity and the variety of experiences and interests among its members enable the Regents to represent views related to myriad issues in contemporary surgery.
A 1970 graduate of the University of Kentucky School of Medicine, Lexington, Dr. Richardson remained at the University of Kentucky to complete a surgery internship and work as a junior assistant resident. He then moved to the University of Texas Medical School, San Antonio, to complete a general surgery residency and a thoracic surgery residency. After completing his surgical training, he returned to Kentucky and rose through the academic ranks at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He has held his current positions of professor of surgery and vice-chair of the department of surgery at the University of Louisville School of Medicine since 1982 and 1985, respectively. Furthermore, he has been chief of surgery service and director of emergency medical services at the University of Louisville Hospital since 2005.
A Fellow of the College since 1980, Dr. Richardson began serving on the Board of Regents in 2003 and served as a member of the Board of Regents Executive Committee from 2010 to 2011. In addition to his work with the College, Dr. Richardson’s dedicated service to the surgical profession includes leadership roles as director (1987) and chairman (1998-1999) of the American Board of Surgery; president of the American Association for Surgery of Trauma (1999); president of the Kentucky Surgical Society (1987); president of the Kentucky Vascular Surgery Society (1989); and president of the Southeastern Surgical Congress (1999).
A prolific scholar and author, Dr. Richardson to date has published 342 articles in peer-reviewed publications, 46 book chapters, and two books of surgical literature, and he has served as editor of The American Surgeon journal since 2005. Moreover, Dr. Richardson has been recognized as a superb educator at the University of Louisville on numerous occasions.
