New Procedure Targets Excessive Underarm Sweat

(PRNewswire) Dr. Girish Munavalli, a dermatologic surgeon at Dermatology, Laser and Vein Specialists of the Carolinas in Charlotte, North Carolina has begun offering the miraDry procedure, which provides a lasting solution for primary axillary hyperhidrosis - a condition causing excessive underarm sweat.

The in-office procedure takes approximately one hour, during which precisely controlled electromagnetic energy is gently delivered to the area under the arm where the sweat glands reside. This energy heats and eliminates them. Other treatment options are designed to temporarily disable the sweat glands and often involve a more invasive surgical procedure.

The miraDry@ system was recently cleared by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration following a randomized, blinded clinical study where 120 patients at seven clinics across the U.S. were treated and followed for 12 months. The procedure is supported by safety and efficacy data from multiple clinical studies with recent clinical data showing 90 percent efficacy and 90 percent patient satisfaction.
