Fish Oil Flops For Afib Prevention

Perioperative treatment with fish oil failed to prevent postoperative atrial fibrillation, researchers reported in an online first edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The incidence of atrial fibrillation among patients undergoing cardiac surgery who were randomized to placebo was 30.7 percent compared with a rate of 30.0 percent among those patients (P=0.74) who received up to 8 grams of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids oil, said Roberto Marchioli, MD, head of the laboratory of clinical epidemiology of cardiovascular disease at Consorzio Mario Negri Sud, Santa Maria Imbaro, Italy.

Patients received the fish oil prior to surgery and for 10 days postoperatively or until hospital discharge.
