Prediabetes No Barrier To Kidney Donation

Patients with prediabetes may still be eligible to serve as kidney donors, making more organs available for transplant, researchers said here.

In a single-center, retrospective study, only about 11 percent of patients who were prediabetic when they donated a kidney had developed diabetes 10 years later, Sindhu Chandran, MD, of the University of California San Francisco, and colleagues reported here at Kidney Week.

The findings "may expand the donor pool if confirmed in larger studies with longer follow-up," Chandran said during a press briefing.
