Gastric banding was associated with improvements in glucose metabolism, normalization of blood glucose in most diabetic patients, and reductions in pro-inflammatory immune cells, researchers found.
At 2 and 12 weeks after surgery, patients had -- on average -- significantly lowered fasting glucose, 2-hour glucose, HbA1c, fasting insulin, and triacylglycerol from baseline measures, according to Katherine Samaras, PhD, of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Darlinghurst, Australia, and colleagues.
Additionally, seven of 10 patients with diabetes who received the gastric band had shifted to normal glucose tolerance or impaired glucose tolerance at 2 weeks after the procedure, they wrote online in Diabetologia.
Researchers have shown that bariatric surgery was associated with shedding of medications for diabetes -- and associated costs -- as early as 6 months after the procedure. Prior research has also shown that laparoscopic gastric banding was associated with diabetes remission and declines in body mass index.
