Protective Disk Proven To Reduce Catheter-Related Infection

The Wound Management division of Ethicon, Inc. [1] offers the Biopatch, a protective disk with CHG to prevent catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) and local infections. According to the company, it is the only dressing clinically proven for use in skin antisepsis. A study published in JAMA® in 2009 showed use of a chlorhexidine gluconate-impregnated sponge (CHGIS) in intravascular catheter dressings reduced rates of catheter-related infections (CRIs), and also showed that changing unsoiled, adherent dressings every seven days rather than three days appears safe. Features of the Biopatch include:

  • A unique design to continually release CHG over 7 days, providing 360º protection
  • CHG, which has proven residual and cumulative effect on the skin and is proven effectiveness in the presence of organic matter including blood, sera and proteins
