Hand-written notes and, occasionally, a few grainy photos used to be enough. Of course, with surgery advancing in leaps and bounds, the surgical documentation process must also keep up with the times. With so many procedures currently being performed through minimally invasive surgery, a digital image is often the only view a surgeon can get of the actual surgical site.
