The STAR Patch™ (or Artificial Bur) from Novomedicus is an adjustable fascial expander prosthesis for the temporary bridging of abdominal wall incisions where primary closure is not possible and/or repeat abdominal entries are necessary. Manufactured in Germany with both CE and FDA approval, the STAR Hypopack is a convenience kit that consists of an improved STAR Patch™ and the basic materials needed to establish a hypobaric/vacuum (or negative pressure) wound dressing after the STAR Patch™ has been sutured in place. The hypobaric wound chamber prevents contamination and facilitates the removal of excess fluid by the use of a drain and external suction. It is designed to leverage use hospital vacuum sources in the OR and ICU and does not require costly equipment rental.
The device is used in life threatening conditions such as severe abdominal trauma, AAA, organ transplant and intra-abdominal infection, with and without abdominal compartment syndrome to:
- enable temporary closure of the incised abdominal cavity when direct fascial closure is not planned or possible,
- prevent exogenous contamination of the wound, and
- permit exact measurements of peritoneal fluid losses for meaningful replacement therapy.
