In addition, the latest generations of surgical display systems are being developed to accommodate High-Definition (HD) technology, which is going even further to improve minimally invasive surgery. When one looks at the technology behind HD, the potential for improved surgical site visibility and other benefits to the surgeons quickly become obvious. In the most basic terms, HD provides the highest available resolution, thereby delivering a crisper and cleaner picture, providing the surgeons with a sharpness and detail closer to real life. Here is a look at some of the state-of-the-art surgical display systems that are changing the way surgery is seen in the modern OR.
Sony is a world leader in HD technology for the medical and surgical markets with high quality cameras, printers, displays and image capture units. Their innovative LMD-2450MD 24-inch (viewable area, measured diagonally) LCD (liquid crystal display) medical-grade widescreen display delivers full 1920 x 1080 HD resolution and boasts 10-bit signal processing and Sony ChromaTRU color balancing for superior detail, brightness and color accuracy. Designed for easy integration and operation in surgical environments, the LMD-2450MD is compatible with a full range of surgical mountings and features a front bezel control panel with touch-sensitive backlighting.

Like the existing 24-inch display, the LMD-3250MD 32-inch LCD features 10-bit signal processing, Sony's ChromaTRU color balancing and a front bezel control panel with touch-sensitive backlighting. Plus, in dual monitor configurations, an innovative mirror image feature inverts the image display on one of the monitors to present clinicians, wherever situated, with an image orientation consistent with their view of the surgical field.
NDS Surgical Imaging, a company whose name is synonymous with surgical display systems, revolutionized the medical imaging industry with its development of the industry's first Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technologies for minimally invasive surgical viewing applications back in 1996. The company continues that tradition of innovation with technological and engineering advances in the fast growing surgical and PACS markets. NDSsi is a global leader in designing and manufacturing comprehensive medical imaging and informatics solutions for today's operative and interventional suites.
NDSsi pioneered the proprietary core technologies that enable surgical and diagnostic imaging to be viewed on the same HD compliant visualization systems. Advanced Imaging Processing (AIP), Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and related integration technologies allow simultaneous viewing of real-time video, fluoroscopic, ultrasound or vital sign imaging. Additionally, these technologies offer surgeons new capabilities as MIS and diagnostic imaging increasingly converge. NDSsi's AIP and DSP technologies encompass a number of proprietary features that work together to provide surgeons with superior clarity and precision images.
Expanding their already impressive and innovative product line, NDSsi in August of last year announced its acquisition of Dome Imaging Systems, the medical business unit of Planar Systems, Inc. Dome manufactures innovative medical display products for diagnostic imaging and patient care applications. Dome's customers include Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) OEM suppliers and leading medical Information Technology resellers to healthcare providers.
NDS Surgical Imaging currently offers the state-of-the-art, high-definition Radiance line of surgical displays in a variety of screen sizes ranging from 19 to 55 inches, as well as the full range of Dome PACS displays.
Stryker Endoscopy, a worldwide leader in high end imaging equipment and systems for use across a broad range of surgical specialties, had built upon its visualization expertise with the WiSe™ HDTV Flat Panel Monitor. This monitor, combined with the WiSe™ HDTV Transmitter, brings unique and innovative technological advancements and financial benefits to the OR. Uncompressed 1080p is transmitted wirelessly to eliminate cable clutter and potential costly repairs to flat panels. Token Keys create unique codes between monitor and transmitters to protect wireless signal quality from interference with other OR devices. WiSe™ HDTV will deliver optimal surgical images with most advanced resolution, brightness and optical clarity.
With nearly twenty years of experience and innovation in medical imaging technology, the Belgian company Barco delivers a comprehensive range of solutions for radiological, surgical and clinical imaging. Barco's family of surgical and endoscopy displays are designed to provide unsurpassed precision while meeting the specific safety and space requirements of the integrated operating theater. Among Barco's high definition surgical display systems is the 24-inch MDSC-2124, a near-patient surgical display that uses widescreen LCD technology featuring full HD resolution (1920 x 1200). The display's bright, high-resolution LCD panel provides surgeons performing surgical procedures using high-definition endoscopy cameras with stunning panoramic views and improved depth perception. Featuring broad input connectivity, the MDSC-2124 offers a versatile display solution for any HD input.
Barco also offers 42-inch and 47-inch high definition surgical displays. These flat displays are ideal for use in modern digital operating rooms and can visualize a wide range of sources, including endoscopic video, room and boom camera video, patient and surgery information, radiology and pathology images, with optimal detail. Delivering full, 1920 x 1080 HD resolution and extremely fast response time, these displays reproduce moving surgery images smoothly, accurately and without artifacts.

A fast response time, combined with a wide viewing angle (178-degrees), makes the T24MSA001-MD ideal for real-time display of EKGs, EEGs, x-ray and other dynamic medical images such as bed side monitoring. The monitor is housed in a sealed, space-saving white chassis and can be mounted on a pole or wall using standard VESA brackets, making it ideal for virtually any medical workstation environment. In addition, it is easily integrated with surgical arm supports and comes with a one-year warranty.

It is easy to see that there is no shortage of surgical display systems currently available to help surgeons optimize their view of the surgical site in the OR. And with the vast range of sizes, options and HD compatible technologies currently on the market, hospitals can outfit their current ORs and still prepare for the future.
