Patton Surgical has developed the PassPort®--a double-shielded trocar designed to enhance patient safety by eliminating the risk of injury during laparoscopic surgery. In laparoscopic procedures performed with conventional trocar designs, the most serious complications—and the most likely to result in death—are patient hemorrhages due to vessel injury and/or infection secondary to bowel injury. Unlike the traditional shielded trocars that enter the abdominal cavity with an exposed, razor-sharp blade, the PassPort dual-shielded tip prevents the blade from entering exposed, thereby providing smooth incision through muscle and fascia with controlled, protected entry into the patient’s abdominal cavity. Additional features include:
- A blunt tip-shield that covers the cutting tip just prior to entry into the abdominal cavity.
- A secondary blade-shield that protects the blade edges before the "plunge effect" (temporary loss of control due to dramatic decrease in resistance) occurs.
- A tip and blade shield combination that provides smooth and controlled penetration of the abdomen while entering blunt.
