In October 2009, TrueVision Systems, Inc. released two new products in the realm of HD in the OR: TrueWare™ 7.0 3D Visualization and Guidance Platform and TrueZoom™ 3D Surgical Camera for its suite of microsurgery systems.

Together these new products provide an advanced 3D multi-window user interface and innovative 3D camera with new features to enhance productivity during surgery. TrueVision® is a real-time 3D high-definition visualization system for microsurgery that includes brain, eye, spine and ear, nose, and throat surgeries.

As Medgadget reports, the set up is at first most useful for instructional purposes by allwong residents and students to observe microscopic surgery better. Individuals watching simply slip on a pair of polarized 3D glasses to observe images in 3D. According to Medgadget, some surgeons who operating under the microscope are even beginning to use this technology as their primary visualization source in place of the microscope. To make it ultra-useful, the system has the ability to integrate current guidance technologies to bring all surgical data on to one screen. Check out the video of the system in use on Medgadget’s web site.

According to the company’s release, TrueWare 7.0 is the imaging software that manages TrueVision’s 3D HD visualization system for microsurgery. TrueWare is the platform for a suite of software tools under development to aid in guidance and navigation during microsurgery that includes real-time CT/MRI image fusion, intraoperative registration, and measurements all of which shows the potential for improved patient outcomes.

Features include:

  • TrueZoom™ 3D Surgical Camera control
  • Fully stereoscopic 3D multi-window portal
  • 3D HD video recording and playback
  • Integration of external data – EG, IGS, DICOM, Phaco, Navigation
  • Multiple 3D 1080p display options
  • Improved color and contrast control
The company states that, for the first time ever, surgeons can connect other operating room devices into one unified visualization system. TrueVision seamlessly integrates into the multi-window 3D 1080p display the various imaging modalities and guidance from other medical devices such as Alcon INFINITI, Medtronic Stealth Station, and Intuitive Surgical’s DaVinci robot. This allows the surgeon and staff to focus on one screen in the OR to view data and the surgical field of view at the same time as opposed to looking at different displays for each device.

The TrueVision® TrueZoom™ 3D Surgical Camera is a patented 3D high-definition real-time image capture module that mounts to surgical microscopes including Zeiss and Leica. The camera features:

  • 2X instant surgical zoom
  • Up to 1920x1080p (HD) resolution at 30fps for each eye
  • Twice the depth of field vs. oculars
  • Seven times the resolution of standard definition
  • Wide dynamic range and color accuracy
  • No alignment, focus, or synchronization necessary

According to the company, the 2X instant zoom is an unprecedented feature of the 3D TrueZoom™ Camera for surgery where the field of view can instantly zoom into the target with no loss of resolution or illumination, no focus adjustments, and the ability to “micro-navigate” the zoomed surgical view. The new 3D Surgical Camera includes a more powerful processing, upgraded sensors, and is compatible with a greater number of microscopes. It is designed to fit most surgical microscopes by replacing the eyepiece module and converting the optical image to a 3D HD digital video stream. The real-time stream is fed to a 3D 1080p display allowing surgeons to operate by looking at the display and to record surgical procedures in unprecedented stereoscopic video.
