LiquiBand Topical Skin Adhesive

Advanced Medical Solutions manufactures a butyl topical skin adhesive, LiquiBand, which is fast-setting and—once set—is strong, durable and effective. It provides an effective barrier against commonly encountered microorganisms, including MRSA.

LiquiBand is indicated for the closure of topical skin incisions including laparoscopic incisions and trauma-induced lacerations in areas of low skin tension that are simple, thoroughly cleansed and have easily approximated edges.

LiquiBand topical skin adhesive utilizes n-Butyl cyanoacrylate, an advanced monomer, and, in an in vitro study, was shown to create an effective barrier against commonly encountered microorganisms, including S. aureus, P. aeruginosa and E. coli bacteria, as well as MRSA and the fungus, Candida albicans9.

Surgical Products asked Advanced Medical Solutions to talk a little more about LiquiBand.

1. How was the idea for Liquiband developed? What needs were you looking to meet with this product?

Through extensive customer research, our product developers and marketers identified users’ needs that were not being met by existing topical skin adhesives. The team converted those needs into required features and then tested new concepts with potential users ultimately leading to the development of LiquiBand. Some of the key unmet needs were around ease of use, control of the glue, and speed of polymerization.

2. How does the product work?

LiquiBand works by activating the glue by breaking a glass ampoule contained within a plastic housing. This is facilitated by LiquiBand’s unique winged applicator design. The wings also allow the user to express the glue in an easy yet controlled manner. The user then applies the glue over the apposed skin edges that were separated by a surgical incision or trauma-induced laceration. The user should hold the edges together for approximately 30 seconds as the glue polymerizes. Then it’s done.

3. What are some of the potential problems with similar products? How does Liquiband address these problems?

Some of the issues with existing products that our team heard were: the glue takes too long to set; the glue is difficult to control once it is out of the applicator tip resulting in various procedural mishaps; the applicator tip gets clogged up requiring the opening of a second device; and the glass ampoule is too hard to break and activate the glue. LiquiBand addresses these issues with: a fast setting monomer, a uniquely designed, winged applicator and applicator tip; and by including no catalyst to the monomer that might accelerate the polymerization.

4. What important information should surgeons using Liquiband keep in mind?

As with all devices, it’s important for surgeons and other users to follow the instructions for use as well as post procedure patient care guidelines. This will help ensure that LiquiBand will be effective. Another important thing to keep in mind is wound suitability. LiquiBand, like other FDA approved topical skin adhesives, should be used in conjunction with deep dermal sutures and not in place of. It should only be used on low-tension wounds in which the skin edges are easily apposed.
