Video: da Vinci S-Robot In Action
This segment from the TV program Inside Jacksonville highlights Baptist Health's da Vinci S-Robot. The da Vinci is a new addition to Baptist's surgical program, further improving surgeons' capability to perform minimally invasive procedures. The S-Robot, the latest version available in the da Vinci Surgical System, is used for procedures in gynecology, gynecologic oncology, adult and pediatric urology and pediatric general surgery.
Physicians began using the S-Robot at Baptist Downtown in October. Surgical specialists with Baptist Health, including Wolfson Children's Hospital, have performed more than 500 surgical cases using its first da Vinci Robotic Surgical System since it was installed in June 2005.
"The technology has allowed us to convert surgery that has traditionally been done with a large incision into a minimally invasive procedure," said Stephen Buckley, MD, a gynecologic oncologist with Baptist Medical Center. "The advantages of this are significantly reduced surgical risks and a greatly shortened hospital stay and post operative recovery."
The S-Robot is the world's first robotic surgical system to use three-dimensional, HD (high-definition) vision to virtually extend the surgeon's eyes and hands into a tiny surgical field.
The state-of-the-art technology scales, filters and translates the surgeon's hand movements into precise movements of micro-instruments through small surgical incisions. Robot technology provides the surgeon with a more natural feeling, greater dexterity and reduced fatigue, compared to conventional laparoscopic surgery.
The S-Robot's new design also takes less space in the operating suite, and the configuration and reach of its arms allow its use in more types of procedures.
Robot technology offers several advantages to patients, including shorter hospital stays, less pain and scarring, a lower risk of infection, less blood loss and need for transfusion, and faster recovery times.
